Bangladesh has submitted the document of ratification of the Marine Biodiversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Convention to the United Nations to protect the world's oceans and rivers from damage to the fragile marine environment due to fishing and other human activities.

On Friday (September 27), the United Nations Permanent Mission to Bangladesh informed this information in a press release.

According to the Permanent Mission, the approval of the BBNJ reinforces Bangladesh's unwavering commitment to international cooperation and regulatory initiatives in maritime affairs.

As an early ratifier, Bangladesh is always committed to the universal and effective implementation of the BBNJ Convention to pave the way for its implementation. With the deposit of instruments of ratification, Bangladesh has now joined the group of pioneer countries that have ratified this important treaty.

The BBNJ Treaty was unanimously adopted at the United Nations on 19 June 2023, a landmark achievement in the governance of the global commons. The Convention strengthens the international legal framework for the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity in marine areas beyond national jurisdiction.

The agreement emphasizes transparent environmental impact assessments and supports efforts to build the capacity of developing countries by ensuring equitable participation in the sustainable management of marine resources.

It is to be noted that the BBNJ Agreement enters into force within 120 days of the 60 member states submitting their instruments of ratification, approval, acceptance or accession.
